Open Cacao Chain, our implementation specifically tailored to the cacao industry, is the only open traceability infrastructure that unifies data from all supply chain participants from bean to bar. OCC allows every participant to exchange their data, connect data validators and ensure transparency and verifiability.

This is becoming progressively more important as new government regulations require sustainability, food safety and ethical sourcing. Data infrastructures like OCC allow ease of compliance when it comes to meeting EU standards, as all of your data is auditable and easily accessible for reporting.

Exciting updates for Open Cacao Chain (OCC)

  1. The adoption of OCC is steadily growing

Particularly in key cacao-producing regions such as Peru and Colombia, we are getting closer to achieving our 2024 goal of 6,000 onboarded farmers. Currently, we have 2,000 farmers successfully onboarding onto OCC via the Micacao Project, with 2,000 more still in the beginning stages of this process.

Just this week we also started onboarding an additional 800 farmers through a cooperative in Colombia. This means that once they begin sharing their data, it will become fully traceable and accessible via OCC, bringing the number of active farmers to nearly 5,000! However, we don't plan on stopping there! By 2035, we aim to become the primary data infrastructure for 80% of the world's cacao supply chain transactions.

  1. Tech advancements for farmers

Another exciting news for OCC is the launch of the MiCacao Farmer App developed by AGROS, in collaboration with farmers in Peru and Colombia. Thanks to this app, farmers can easily create and keep ownership of their own data.

Key features:

  • Efficient even on low-tech phones, with less than 8GB of RAM

  • Polygon mapping capabilities, which allows farmers to map their land by simply walking or drawing around their land.

  • EUDR compliance: Once farmers enter their data in the farmer app, EUDR compliance can be verified and then broadcasted to OCC. This is crucial for farmers exporting to the EU, as it provides proof that their cacao production is deforestation free.

We look forward to seeing Open Cacao Chain's continuous growth, and creating a wider positive impact in the global cacao industry.
